The Surgical Journey

Dr Jeff Ling

Jeff and his team understand that deciding to have surgery is not a decision made lightly, and that the journey can look daunting and difficult at the outset.

As ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu once said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. Even the most difficult journeys have a starting point, and Jeff and his team will help you achieve your goals when you take that first step. We hope that some of your questions and concerns may be settled by reading the information on our website, but there is no substitute for a face-to-face consultation with Jeff and his team.

Surgical Journey

In general terms, we will go through an investigative process together to help determine the best way of achieving your goals.

Jeff endeavours to consistently engage his patients in the decision-making process by taking them carefully through all the available non-operative and surgical options before refining the treatment plan. He strives to support you through the entire journey from initial consultation through to return to optimal function as comfortably and as seamlessly as possible. This process is facilitated and enhanced by a dedicated team of practice managers and nurses within the practice and by engaging other health care professionals including trusted physiotherapists and podiatrists. The professionals we engage are carefully selected individuals that we work closely with who can reach out to Jeff at any time, ensuring optimal and consistent communication between all team members.

If surgery in the private sector is required, this will take place at Prince of Wales Private Hospital, Sydney Surgical Centre, or St. Luke’s Hospital.

A patient information sheet on your operation is normally provided to you in person at the consultation, and they can also be found on this website under “Patient Information PDFs”. You will need to fill out an admission form which can be done in hard copy or done online in the comfort of your own home. Jeff’s practice managers can help walk you through this if you have any issues.

In the days after the initial consultation, our practice nurse will contact you to answer any further medical or logistical questions you may have thought of and to confirm the date for surgery.

Two to three weeks before your surgery, a member of the team will again contact you to ensure you are comfortable moving forward, and to answer any final burning questions. The answers to many common concerns or questions patients have can also be found on this website under “Before Surgery” and “After Surgery”.

  • Your admission time
  • Your fasting time
  • What to bring e.g. hard copies of your imaging
The order of each theatre list is not confirmed until the day or two before surgery and is generally determined according to medical need, whether you are a child or adult, the procedure being performed e.g. day surgery versus overnight surgery, distance from home, and personal preference.
