Dr Jeff Ling is an orthopaedic surgeon with expertise in all aspects of surgery of the foot and ankle in adults and children.
He has a particular interest in patient-specific total ankle replacement, modern techniques for ankle instability, and the correction of flat foot deformity. His scope of practice covers sports Injuries, arthroscopy, fractures, tendon disorders, forefoot conditions, bunions, arthritis, and paediatric problems. Through his university and academic appointments, he continuously updates and contributes to the development of the latest evidence-based options. He is dedicated to creating personalised treatment plans for his patients, in a supportive, engaging and empathetic environment.
Jeff was born and raised in a medical family in Sydney and has the privilege of having lived in all four quadrants of this beautiful city. After graduating from Medicine at the University of New South Wales, Jeff completed his internship, and general surgical residency at Royal North Shore Hospital. After a year as a senior house officer in trauma and orthopaedics in Bristol, in the UK, he returned to Australia and completed his subspecialty training in Orthopaedic Surgery through the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and obtained his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons – FRACS (Orth). He then undertook two years of further subspecialty training in foot and ankle surgery in the form of three fellowships, starting with the foot and ankle fellowship at Royal North Shore Hospital. He then continued his training in the USA.
He was a clinical fellow at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, which is ranked the top hospital for orthopaedics in the USA. Here, his training focused on adult deformity correction, ankle replacement surgery and sports injuries of the foot and ankle. During this time, he had the privilege of treating professional athletes from the NBA, NFL, and New York Ballet. This was followed by a paediatric fellowship at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland, Oregon, where his training focused on deformity correction in the paediatric foot and ankle.
Jeff then returned home to Australia to practice, where he began his private practice at Sydney Orthopaedic Specialists at Prince of Wales Private, as well as taking up appointments at Prince of Wales Hospital, and Sydney Children’s Hospital. Well into his second decade of practice now, he still enjoys the process of getting active individuals back to the best version of themselves.
Jeff feels privileged to be involved in the education and training of medical students, junior doctors, and local and international surgeons. He is the Head of Orthopaedics at Sydney Children’s Hospital and has previously held the position of Director of Orthopaedic Training. He is the Secretary of the Australian Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS), the peak body overseeing standards of foot and ankle care in Australia. He has published significant articles in international, peer-reviewed journals and is a frequent contributor at national and international meetings.
He particularly enjoys his annual trip to The Kingdom of Tonga where he has been travelling to for over a decade, where he provides expertise and support to the local health service on the management of clubfeet, an endemic problem in the Polynesian population.
